Stranger Beside Me by Anne Rule is one of the best I've ever come across. Fascinating and scary, with excellent insight into her relationship with serial killer Ted Bundy.
Helter Skelter - the story of the Manson family (Charles Manson) - riveting psychological profile of a cult leader and his followers and the killing spree that made them infamous.

You stole my all time favorite - A Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule - she is the best true crime story writer!
I really am amazed that you and Heather liked A Stranger Beside Me as much as I did. Helter Skelter--I didn't read the book, but I saw the 1976 movie and the latest documentary on Manson. What a riveting, disturbing man, and the famly...I've seen some interviewed. I can't think of Sharon Tate and what they did to her without cringing. Ed Gein is a great study in serial or mass murders, too, MB. I'm really into the "WHY" and "HOW" concering these sick individuals. Great reading!
I think we should all compare book and movie titles sometime, on the non fiction/true crime genre. Have our own AP Bookclub! So many great answers to my Q so far!
I've read everything Ann Rule wrote I believe! She profiles these sickos so we can get a better idea of why they did the horrible things for which they were convicted - that's the part that fascinates me too!
I loved Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt, who died recently. Talking about growing up in abject poverty in the slums of Limerick and seeing how he lived with an alcoholic father was amazing. The fact that he managed to escape that and build the life he had is a testimony to his tenacity. His story telling skills are fantastic. It's a moving story.
Great choice, L. Sad to say, I haven't read McCourt's book. I also heard the movie was critically acclaimed as well. He certainly is an inspiring man, battling such severe odds to become the man he was before he passed away. I'd like to learn about the culture and lifestyle of those slums of Limerick one day. That's a book that's on my list! Great reading, I'm sure.
The Road. Who's the author, I'll google it. I agree, I always read the books first before I watch the films. Some rarely measure up, but the one's that do are gems. I know McCourt wrote Tiz,too. I've seen his books in my library. I was telling Marilou and Heather we should all exchange titles and have our own AP Bookclub. Have you ever read Wally Lamb's I Know This Much Is True? Moving and inspiring.
I read Angela's Ashes too, and Tis - excellent reading. I sa McCourt interviewed a few times - what a lovely man he was! I felt really bad when he died!
I really missed out on Angela's Ashes. Oh, it's spelled Tis. Now I have to find that book!

When i clicked on the question I thought Ann Rule.. and was amazed you spoke of her too!
Wow, you read Stranger Beside Me? I think it was an addictive read, Heather. Learning what shapes these serial killers, Nature vs. Nuture and all that. I loved it. Ted had quite an upbringing, finding our he was adopted when he was older. Anne Rule, the fact that she actually worked with Ted! Scary but such a great read. Mark Harmon played him in the '86 t.v. movie Deliberate Stranger. Great performance! Anne Rule is one amazing writer. What courage she has in telling these true crimes!
I haven't read all of her books, but that one stands out for me as being the most memorable! What an intelligent, courageous woman, not to mention a talented writer. I had no idea you were a fan of hers, too. We must exchange titles and authors sometime.
Yes, I loved it but, scary, yes, she could so easily have become one of his victims! Ted Bundy looked so normal, so ordinary, even quite handsome.. until you took a good look at his eyes, creepy.. working at the Samaritan's too! I think my daughter had all of Anne Rule's books. I can't find an author to touch her in True Crime.
Well, I did read a London True Crime about Jack The Ripper. Heather, it was so well written. They never did catch the Ripper, and that makes it all the more exciting to read. You can do your own investigation, and choose who you think he really was. It's called Bed of Nails by Michael Slade. He combines Scotland Yard, with Canadian agencies(RCMP I think.). Ed Gein is another American serial killer you'd love. Google his name sometime!
Through Gates Of Splender by Elizabeth Elliot. The true story of Jim Elliot and five other missionaries that were killed by the a tribe of Indians in South America in the late 1950s
I've never come across that one. It does sound like a great read. I'm just glad so many people are into non fiction these days. This does sound familiar to me...the missionaries being killed. Maybe I saw a documentary about it. Was it made into a movie? Either way, great answer, babsara.
I've heard of him. Wasn't he the guy who they called the Werewolf of Wysteria and the Brooklyn Vampire? I didn't read a book about him. He was into child molesting and cannabalism...too disturbing for me.
i dont read nonfiction..i like to be pulled away into a hidden land where nothng reminds me of reality. my fave series is INK HEART IN SPELL AND INK DEATH. the three most wonderfull books ever! Funke has even inspried me to write my very own midevil/fanasy novel. with giants, unicarns, glass men, and blue fairies tugging at your hair for thier nests. and sometimes i even think of myself as meggie and zack(my bf) as Farid.
but the best i was forced to read was Diary of Anne Franke.
I read a lot of fiction, too. I can disappear into a good book, pretend I'm in another land, universe or country. INK HEART....never read them. Tell me about them sometime. Wow, I think you should write your own novel, Mandy! Awesome idea. I like the part of you as meggie and zack as Farid. You are so creative. I could never write like that. I did read Diary of Anne Franke..sad and scary, and her actual diary! What she went through hiding from the Germans was terrifying. I saw the movie, too
i know...sad... you will be the first to get a copy. i dont want to publish, but i will bind it by hand for you then send it 2 ya. my hand writting too.!!!! how special can you get? lol
Thumbs Up to you, Mandy! Hand-written by you. I really admire that. That really is something very special. I would love to read it, and thanks for offering. You'd have to autograph it for me, To Kyle-my number 1 Fan. I wish I could write like you do.
don't you think theres enough false claims, disillusion and shams in this world to keep you entertained, you need another outlet of pretend characters to satisfy your many personalities. CREEPY
i have two books that are my favorite. where the red fern grows and tuck everlasting. i don't like to read that much but when i get into a good book i can't put it down!!LOL:)
I don't get that much time to read, either. But I'm like you, when I find a good book I can't put it down...I'm hooked. I must tell my Nieces about Where the Red Fern Grows and Tuck Everlasting. They love to read, and I think they'd like these. Happy Reading, Krissy!! LOL!
