Is it just me, or is everyone else disturbed enough by these lazy kids to lobby for a "flag as cheating" button or perhaps a more Machiavellian conspiracy of disinformation to discourage this behavior?
Doesn't a question that starts with a phrase like 'what are the answers to page...?' deserve a cascade of wrong answers, just to teach a lesson they obviously aren't learning anywhere else?
I don't know how many times I've answered - Read the book, and you'll know the answers, or do your own homework! I do help with math, but always show steps or tell how I arrived at the answer. I often think, if these cheaters can find askpedia, why can't they research their own homework? We have to take a stand and come up with a solution as a team - one pat answer to these cheaters from everyone. This would be a good Q for everyone to offer an opinion as to what we should say in situations like this like - STUDY! You may just learn something!
I"m with you on that one. I posted a question last week about that. At best, all I will do is find a site where they can read up and answer their own questions. I don't mind if a kid is stumped or is looking for more information, but when it is SO obvious that they are looking for a quick answer at our expense, I won't give it to them.
On a funnier note, have you noticed how we are supposed to just make this mysterious teacher's guide or answer key materialize out of thin air, and know what it is they are asking us to help them cheat on? At that point, I sometimes pull out my Magic 8 Ball and have Madame Cleo come and answer the question, usually telling them that the ball says "NO" and that Madame Cleo's spirit guide says that bad things will happen to cheaters and to go and do their own work or suffer the consequences of their dishonesty.
I think you are on to something here as a type of flagging criteria for AP to look into. These cheaters are just as offensive as the people using foul language and the ones that are harrassing us.

Here is AP's response to the request about cheaters.
We don't consider students coming to Askpedia looking for help with
their homework answers to be cheating.
This is no different from them asking another person for help with their homework or doing an online search for answers. It is up to each person who answers questions to provide an appropriate answer.
However, what we will consider inappropriate is users leaving
disparaging, harassing, or offensive responses to questions and answers. This type of behavior goes against the spirit of an open and online community for everyone who has questions and needs help.
I love when they give you the old 'McHale/Amherst 9th grade study guide, page 2 subsection j' or whatever. The only hope for an answer to a query that starts that way is from a fellow cheater who probably doesn't know any more on the subject than they do or they wouldn't be here.
We all know that this is what happens when they wait to the last minute to do their homework, didn't listen in class and don't want to bother to read the book. Frankly, they deserve to fail. Here's the scary part. These kids grow up to breed and vote. Doesn't that make your skin crawl????
My concern is more for the integrity of the site. Do we really want this to be known as the place to go to cheat your way through school?
If only one person tries to stop it, it won't work. It either has to be a site policy or an organized effort on the part of those who use the site responsibly. As someone who encourages everyone to get a real education, I would be a hypocrite if I did not actively discourage cheating. File this under the heading of 'it takes a village...'.
The policy would ensure an instant flagging and deletion of questions and/or accounts. It would send a message that it is not tolerated and will have consequences. They may persist, but continued flagging and deletion will still make a point.
I agree with you WS but how would one decide if it was a cheater or not and it would be cruel to flagg an innocent persons Q. Maybe they need a CHEATERS catagory LOL
I couldn't agree more. You've brought up a very interesting point. This is a great idea you've had, and I think AP should implement it. We've had an overflow of these types of questions, and I'm all for any measures that would put a stop to it. If these askers can't do this simple work for themselves, and are constantly looking for the quick-fix way out, what does that say about them? It's not our job to do their work for them, and I think it's about time they get off their behinds and get a taste of what real work is. Excellent suggestion!
I have a little different philosophy about this.
First, Please do not give wrong answers. That is bad for the site's integrity. This should be known as a place where you can get a good answer.
If it is obvious they are just looking for someone to do their homework for them, I will not answer either. That is an art and not a science.
Students do get stuck on things and if you show them how to do something, maybe they will be able to do the next problem themselves. Sometimes it is helpful for them to see what a good answer looks like. They better not copy my answers or they will get caught and hopefully punished. Still, it may should them ideas about how to do their own.
I look on us as teachers and sometimes parents. We want to give good guidance.
The owner/operator of Askpedia has a lot of things on his plate right now. I think they are more important for us that this.
When all they do is give a reference and not the question, The way to handle that is to leave a comment in the question discussion box asking for more information. If they have to type the question, that is some benefit to them.
Hope you are tolerant of a different view!
I will frequently ask a question in an inflammatory way just to get differing points of view. I seek them out. They don't bother me at all. Thanks for pitching in!
Personally, I don't mind extending a helping hand..notice that I said "helping hand".. They should be doing their own homework...How are they going to learn if they keep coming here for the answers. A lot times I do assist in math problems because I know this may be a difficult subject. However, they are given step by step instructions so that they do understand the problem.
I have problems with students who like answers to English - sentence structures...Are they asleep in class? Where are their notes? Its just pure laziness to come here for answers relate to this subject. There are so many English resources online- basically, I refer them to the site.
It's just bad when we give answer without any explanation for these types of questions..That's just my 2 cents on your question {{hugs}}
