In most local governments, a petition needs to be signed by a significant and specified number of qualified voters before it can even be considered by the town/city review board. All of us have a gripe and can get a few people here and there to care enough to sign a petition, so this mandatory number makes good sense as a non-time waster for the board. But, after that count rule has been met, the objective of the petition needs loyal representatives to make sure that it gets the attention the signers believe it should. Petitioning is a vital part of our government process and can make a difference in how our representatives vote when followed through by its sponsors.
