When something is done over and over again, it gains meaning for its original purpose. Eventually it is done as a celebration of its original intent. It becomes a tradition. Thanksgiving is a tradition. We do it because it's original purpose was a celebration of survival for which people gave thanks. It became symbolic over time and has been celebrated ever since.
