Should users be forced to give there age?? Well... I suppose you can look at this from two instances. If a user asks a question, and you feel your answer could be more benefical if you knew there age, Then yes, I suppose it would be good to know.
If the user was not seeking advice and just asking fun questions etc, then I don't see why you would require there age, as long as the question is alright! I personally think it would be best if you just ask him/her for there age and if they do not reply or do not tell you, then you basically cant help them.
Maybe you will get an idea of age, as they contribute. Some maybe not. As for me... The reason I didn't say I was young at the start, was because I wanted people to who me and not grudge me on my age, For you to know me as a adult, more than a kid. If that makes sense? I joined the site when I was 12, although I broke no TOS, as at the time AP did not state age restrictions, Back in June 08.
To sum up.. I dont think everyone would be confortable in states there age at the start. I think it's just best to ask if nesserary!! :)
I don't know if that would help because people lie about their ages all the time on this site. What I do think should be mandatory is to put the country where you reside in your profile. People ask legal and medical questions all the time and don't tell where they're from - laws and medical practices vary from country to country, state to state, etc. These questions are impossible to answer with any certainty.
I really do wish age and location were mandatory, as it would make it easier to answer questions. Apparently, the powers that be at AP feel that it isn't necessary, even though we did ask in the past that at least the location be a mandatory posting.
Even if it was mandatory, people lie. When we have kids that are obviously not old enough to use the site, we can't do a thing about it unless they slip up and give it away. All they have to do is say that they are 13, even if they are not. Unfortunately, there is no way to verify age, other than to trust that people are being honest.
Considering the number of bad apples that have been banned in the past and keep cropping back up, there is ample proof that just about anybody can get on this site. All you have to do is lie and be creative.
I would like to see their photo, then at least it would be obvious if they were a child, what about a passport photo so it would make it more difficult to cheat and we could get more of a feel about the person asking the question?
Ideally, yes. Being unaware of the asker's real age, we sometimes unknowingly answer &/or comment inappropriately. Of course, we can always guess, basing on the way the user asks/answers, but there's no way of telling if we're right or wrong.
IN REALITY, however, anybody can lie about their age. Thus, requiring everyone to state their age will only prove to be useless.
If you read the questions they post, most of them already do. I don't think chronological age is really relevant in a social context. You can get intelligent questions from young teens. We also get questions all the time from people who are, biologically speaking, in their 30's or 40's and you still have to answer them as though you were talking to a small child. Even then, they STILL don't (or refuse to) get it.
Age is just a number. Maturity on the other hand...
Alan, age is useful in some instances. I have had questions regarding female issues that are completely age dependant. I can't accurately help them if I don't know their age. When women come on here wondering why they have stopped having periods, I don't know if they are pregnant or entering menopause. That is why I think age can be helpful.
I didn't say it wasn't relevant in a medical context. I said social, which is most of what goes on around here.
Being that children of an age to be attractive to predators use this site, it might be risky to REQUIRE users to post their ages for all to see. If someone asks a question like you described and you need to know their age to give an accurate answer, why not just tell them that? If they really want an accurate answer, they won't mind.
I agree on the predator point of view completely. Unfortunately, there is no site use coaching tools that help askers to know when it's important to include age and location and when it is not. Most people don't seem to understand that there are important facts that need to be included with their questions when they ask them. The quality of their answer suffers because of that.
I think is is rude to ask a woman her age in a social situation. If she volunteers it, she is entitled to get away with what she wants.
Most men don't care one way or the other.
We do want to verify that the kids are over 13, because we don't want to expose younger ones to some of the things that get said here. There really is no practical way to do that. A box could be provided for it at sign up time; like location is now. To give good help, location is so much more important.
The operator of the site wants to make it very easy to use and there are good reasons for that. If someone stays on the site very long, it is usually easy to make a good guess at age anyway.
If age is important to a question, you can always request it in the question discussion box. People are not using that much as they should anyway.
Age helps in age related questions, like health, education, law, etc... but I really wish there was a tutorial available to newbies that tells them that location and age are useful in particular situations.
i have been on other sites and the tutorial that you mention
seems to be the norm on all but here. everyone is encouraged to read the rules and educate on how to use the
sites..maybe we can expect something like this in our future.
intelligence need not be based on age. i am 44 and new to this site and have thus far found questions and answers to be well thought out and smart , and some to be debatable. if you ask a question and get a reasonable answer what does the age matter? honesty is prefered, i for one do not want to chat with a 10yr old! (legal implications you know)
There are stupid people of all ages, shapes and sizes, its just a question of weeding them out! It would help to be able to see the person and their age but then we have to trust their honesty, difficult!! Glad to have you in the family!
i think age is not important in this site. if any question requires age,i can tell here.but i feel and don;t want to give my age to all the people in this site.only to my close friends i will give my details.but i think we should give our place as it is required for some questions.
some minors are coming in this site ,so for them ,AP should be strick to avoid them .
