First, you have to make sure you meet the requirements of Common Law marriage. Just living together isn't enough. You have to present yourselves to the world as being married. You must also live in a state that recognizes Common Law marriages. There aren't many.

If you're in a state that recognizes Common Law marriages, and you have met all the requirements, then the marriage is treated like any other marriage. For example, divorce is required to end the relationship. You are just as married as those who purchased a license.
