Aids or HIV was first thought to be a descendant of a Simian Immunodeficiency Virus because certain strains of SIV's bear a very close resemblance to HIV-1 and HIV-2--the 2 types of HIV. It corresponded to SIVism, a strain of the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus found in the sooty Mangabey(or White-collared monkey). In February 1999, researchers announced that they had found a type of SIVcpz that was almost identical to HIV-1. This strain was identified in a frozen sample taken from a captive member of the sub-group of chimpanzees known as Pantroglodytes, once common in West Central Africa. Here's a site on the subject: http://www.avert.org/origin-aids-hiv.htm
