I have a loved one that suffered a massive stroke this morning. When his wife found him he was not breathing or responsive. He is now in NICU and and still no response to anything. Many test have been done and he was diganosed that both sides of his brain have been affected. When the Dr shines the lights in his eyes there is nothing. He has grunted some and he seemed to pull his arm away when the nurse pulled the tape off his arm. Is this hopeful thinking? We are not really getting much from the Dr. Is there any chance of him living a normal life and what is the most common out come in cases such as this?

If the doctor used the words massive stroke, it was probably her way of letting you know that damage amassed is great. It isn't a medical word, but has taken on that connotation to help non medical people try to grasp the immensity of a situation. Let me start by saying that I am very sorry for this event. If the patient survives it, there will be slow, tedious progress, even if all goes well. The return to prestroke condition is not the usual occurrence. His ability to react to pain is not uncommon. The most basic part of the brain regulates breathing, pain sensation, and some chemistry for the heart to remain beating. Grunting when reposition is very often a natural reaction also. After some other test results are in, the doctor will have a clearer picture of the actual diagnosis and prognosis. Hopefully she will have good news for the spouse, family and friends. He is my prayers. God bless you for caring.

This can be better answered after an EEG study is done to see how active the different areas of the brain are. But it does not sound promising, I am sorry to say. What do you mean by NICU? In hospitals, the "N" before ICU stand for "neonate" meaning newborns. Or is this a place for people with neurological conditions?
