The heater is located in the garage, yet I get a loud ticking noise in my upstairs bedroom wall every time it goes on. It wakes me up at night.

That could be the vents, piping & tubing expanding. As cold metals heat up they expand, when they cool they contract. This happens a lot with steam radiators, older homes & trailer homes (especially those with tin siding).

If its what I think its is, it should be a gradual build up of noise over the course of 3 to 5 minutes, with perhaps a few isolated loud bangs or pops. Remember that these ventilation systems are hollow for the most part and that could be creating a seemingly louder noise due to echo. Also, consider the age of your home and how well its was insulated. If the noise lasts longer than 3 to 5 minutes or there is a burning smell accompanied by this, see a professional.
