Instead of "getting" her something, plan a day doing whatever she likes doing: going to a ballgame, <lol> drinking in a bar, watching TV, riding mountain bikes, whatever.
Most girls would be more psyched to have a great day with a cool Mr. Nice Guy than get a silly present. ☺
I would give some kind of token or acknowlegement. Within a few months of dating there should be some insight into what gift might make that special someone smile.
I wouldn't expect anything. If the girl is smart and interested in him, she will look on this as an opportunity to show interest with an acknowledgment of some sort. It puts some cement in the relationship.
On the flip side, he had better not forget her birthday.
