The new school year is just around the corner in the UK :( So preparations must be made. I am currently having a major problem with getting to and from school for next year, I appreciate any advice you could give to me in relation to this. I have mentioned this briefly before on AP a few weeks back. (link at bottom)
For the last two years I purchased a bus pass that enables me to travel directly too and from school everyday. So I am only allowed two journeys a day, five days a week, 190 days a year. So it is fine to use.
A few months back we got a letter in from the company that supplies the pass. (Translink) stating: "Translink has recently carried out a review concerning how prices are calculated for pupil passes. The purpose of this review was to insure that passes are priced in a consistent and fair manner."
In the past years we have paid £144 = $232 per annum for the pass. We thought that was a "fair price!"
In our new quote, the price amounted turned out to be £396/$652. Now we do not believe that this is a fair price!!
The price of the pass has nearly trebled and they state that "We discovered a few anomalies that we wish to rectify." They admit that it was a fault in there system. Not a fault of ourselves.
I and my family have been on the phone with them numerous number of times and have failed to get anywhere. The person that we have to deal with has been quite unprofessional and has refused to name her manager. Due to our constant calls they sent out a letter with the breakdown of the price.
The worst thing is, two of my friends who live directly across the road who get the same bus, every day. Were only charged £150 each. Roughly the same quote price I paid last year.
I couldn't go on with everything we have done about this, but it is possible that we will lose hundreds of pounds due to this.
Now long off the phone! I was in a headed conversation with the Acting Pass Office Manager.
He said to me that he considered the case closed and there is nothing else the company could do. He said that my complaint has been dealt with and he could not comment on anyones elses situation.
I did pick up a few comments he said to me, What do you think of this??
He said "We discovered a few anomalies recently and we will be acting on them." (meaning my neighbours)
I said " It wouldn't be good for Translink's reputation, to originally send out a quote of £150 then bring it up to £400."
His response "Who are you to tell us what we can and can't do?"
He said "We have got an organisation to run, I understand, you and others have spoken to us on numerous occasions. We can not keep dealing with the same complaint over and over again."
He said "Nothing has changed on our side, and the price can not be changed. I do not know how I can help you any longer, "So if you do decide to contact this office again, It will be made short and sweet!"
Do you not think that what he said, is quite cheeky! What do you think of the response from the Manager of the department?
He knows I am only 14, do you think he would have said this to an adult?
Please share what you think!

Meant to say: Not long off the phone! Was in a *heated* conversation!!
Mike... do you have a website for this transit authority? Can you find one? Usually, there is a teeny tiny contact us hidden somewhere on the page. Since the person you are dealing with is being an extremely bad employee and won't pass you on their manager, you might be able to get through to them through that avenue.
I am also posting a site for world law... it is a free advice site. Maybe you can get some legal advice on your situation. It really is absurd that you have neighbors that are being charged the old price and you are being gouged for the new.
I feel your pain...the price of gas has driven up the price of public transportation here, too. A monthly Metra pass is about $150 a month to use to Chicago and back.
Good lord, Mike, to say he was being a jerk is an understatement. I gave you that worldlaw link. Try that and see what they say. The man may not have been quite so rude to an adult, and he just doesn't understand that you are a very astute and mature 14 year old. He just assumed that you could be bullied and treated you accordingly. You know, come to think of it, he's trying to backpedal as much as possible. He knows that they screwed up and he won't come clean. That is why I think contacting worldlaw might give you another shot at things. If nothing else, they can either advise you on how to proceed or to tell you that you are SOL.
For what it's worth, I think it's criminal what you are being charged. I completely sympathize and hope that you can get somewhere with the link I gave you. If nothing else, perhaps your mom or grandmother can call so that this guy is dealing with an adult instead of a minor child.
Big hug to you Mike... hang in there.

Mike this has to be a misquote! Go a little further in finding out who else got their bus pass trebled by putting an ad in the newspaper. If it turns out to be a small percentage, then it has to be a misquote. Then you can all get together and hire legal counsel to get to the bottom of the issue. Until you get that explanation, ask if there is any way that you can pay for the pass in installments so you don't have to wait for reimbursement when you get this settled. Good luck
Since you are not having any luck in dealing with the company, the next two things to do are to report it to the consumers affairs division of the government. Explain that you are being charged differently than your neighbors and the company won't correct this error.
There should be a transportation commission also that will take complaints.
Hard for me to say how good they are in your country. If I did that in my state, I would get a full explanation quickly because these companies do not want trouble with their regulatory bodies.
A complaint to the Better Business Bureau might help. Often this doesn't work, but it might.
i am also wondering if the civic leaders would do anything. polititions would want there comunity happy and if you got enough people to show up at your town meeting than they might put pressure on the company for some explinations. just a thought..
Hi, a few suggestions:
You say the guy across the street uses the same bus, you could take his pass to their offices and say"I want another of these, thank you." From that they must give you the same one at the same price.
You could also take this nice letter of yours and mail it to your local newspaper for publication. The company is bound to react when other people see your letter and also start writing in.
The last option I think you might consider is to approach your "Consumer board" or "Department of Transport"
Good luck.
We approached an organisation called The Consumer Council, They are the transport regulator jere. Hope they will be able to do something. Thanks for answering.
Good luck, I hope you come right because it can add up to big bucks if they are allowed to get away with pushing tariffs up whenever they feel like it.

Its completely absurd! I recommend you phone your local paper and have a Journalist come down to see you. call the TV, ask them to send a Jounalist, call the top newspapers and do the same! Highlight this and SHAME them!
I cannot add anymore to what all have said here and thoroughly agree with them!
Just wanted to give you my support too! Go get em Mike, we're all behind you!
:) Yep Mike, don't rest on this one and - make sure they compensate you and your family for all this distress not to mention all the ridiculous pallaver and rudeness! Sell your story to the highest bidder!!! do you see.. a holiday coming on.. !!!!
