This was told to me as a true story. The name has been changed.
Mr. Misor was a very rich man. He had amassed a fortune through dealing in exquisite estate sales and the like, I think. He had one very bad problem. He smelled bad and it was getting worse.
He went to every doctor he could think of. They did every exam that was known to medical science. They drew blood, They scanned, they stripped him naked and examined every inch of his body. They found nothing. All the exams came back negative. He was the picture of perfect health.
Finally he heard of a new doctor in town and decided to give it one last chance.
This doctor was just an ordinary general practitioner, not a fancy specialist. He found the problem and how to treat it.
What do you think the problem was?

The new physician used only his nose to find the cause.
I agree with the others -- his was a dental problem. But since a lot had already given this answer, I'm giving another one: it was his clothes that stink. He needed a new laundryman.

Excessive sweating may have underlying causes - may occur even when the Mr. Misor is not warm accompanied by terrible body odor...GP instructed Mr. Misor to drink a cup of sage tea daily to reduce sweat gland activity. Use one and one half teaspoonsful of dried sage or two tea bags in one cup of water; steep for ten minutes; drink in small doses throughout the day
he was Indian and he loved his Curry- he loved it so much he ate it all the time- what he didn't realize was that he was sweating out the smell of the curry. Poor guy just needed to change his diet.
I think Mr. Misor was a big meat eater. Too much meat in the diet can cause body fluids to become more acidic, and create a foul body odor - add garlic to that, and it would even be worse! Cure - cut way back on meat - odor gone!

I bet his house was filled with antiques since he dealt in estate sales, and his furniture was musty, including his bed and rugs. He lived in it so got used to the smell, but it stuck to his clothes. This furniture was never cleaned, and the older it got, the worse he smelled. The doctor recommended his house get a thorough cleaning - that solved the odor problem.
Depends on who told you that story - if by he 'smelled bad' that person meant his sense of smell was poor, then he probably had a mild case of hyposmia, although I'm guessing that's not the case.
I'd imagine that it had something to do with exposure to a certain substance during his working day or where he lived. Of course, he may have been eccentric and had a pet skunk!
