You mean the rear brake lights still work? If the rear brake lights are
also the tail lights (each lamp has a two-way set of elements inside)
then the fuses are okay; but weirdly just the tail light element in each
lamp burned out, is that it? I would go out and get 2 fuses, and two
sets of tail light bulbs (so I could test the system with new parts) and
keep a replacement set in the glove box should this recur. An auto
parts place will help find the right bulbs and fuses, and may give a
diagnosis if you described what happened. For now I would take
out the bulbs to see if they have a burned out tail light element. Also
check to see if something caused the lamps to short out.

Check the fuse box for blown fuses.
