I'm thinking about joining the gadget obsessed herd and buying an iPhone. Does anyone here actually have an iPhone?

How is it? Did it live up to your expectations and is the keyboard really usable?

I'm looking for an iPhone to replace my aging Razr so the bar isn't that high, but I'm interested in hearing about people's experiences.

Ok, I have the iPhone. I wasn't one of those people who waited in line to buy it. I bought it fairly recently and it's become my favorite gadget.

Overall, it really has lived up to my expectations. It's much smaller and sleeker than I thought it would be when I saw the original pictures. They did a good job making the surface flat but the sides slightly rounded so that it fits your fingers when you hold it. It's much more comfortable than holding an iPod which has flat sides. The screen is also amazing. It looks so much better than a video iPod.

The big question mark for me was the touchscreen keyboard. Having used a BlackBerry and a Treo, I wasn't sure it a touchscreen keyboard was going to work. I've been working on the typing for some time now and I still don't have the hang of it. I've tried typing with my thumbs, fingers, one hand, two hands, etc. and I still can't type like I used to on the BlackBerry and Treo. My thumbs must be much bigger than Apple designer anticipated or I must be doing something wrong. At least the phone dialing is not a problem since the keys are big on the screen. Also, it's not a big deal since I didn't buy the iPhone for email since I don't email a lot on the go.

The thing that's really amazing on the iPhone is the Google maps. It's fast and responsive, even on the slow EDGE network and seems as fast as Google maps through my DSL connection. The pinching motion with your fingers works brilliantly and the drag using your fingers to move around the map is so intuitive and easy. It really is an amazing user interface.

Overall, I'm really happy with the iPhone. When you factor in the cost of an 8GB nano and what you have to pay for a hot new cellphone, the iPhone isn't really that expensive. I'm sure I'll be kicking myself when Apple comes up with a cheaper, cooler iPhone nano, but for now I'm one happy customer.

It's a decent phone, but I wouldn't buy it just yet. There are two major features that iPhone is missing to become the be-all phone / PDA / music player.

1. No 3G data network support. iPhone is GPRS and EDGE capable, but not the latest 3G HSDPA. Which means its data speed is limited to 30-40 KB/s, and generally not enough to use as a serious internet mobile device. Also there seems to be other problems with iPhone's EDGE support, as the internet browsing on AT&T network is painfully slow, much slower than other GPRS and EDGE devices for some reason.

2. No Bluetooth A2DP stack. So iPhone has iPod built-in, but no hi-fi bluetooth headset support? Right now the only way to listen to music is via wired headphone.

Overall it's a decent phone / pda / music player, with superb UI, excellent battery life, and great sex appeal. But I would just wait for the 2nd generation or until Apple can add the 3G and better Bluetooth support.

You can read a whole bunch of reviews online to see people's thoughts and reactions to the iPhone. Engadget as a well written and detailed review on the iPhone that pretty much sums up everything you need to know. The URL is http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/03/iphon...

Instead of just reading about it or hearing other people's opinion, I suggest that you take a trip to your local Apple Store and spend some time with the display model. Since the Apple Stores can get crowded, go in the early morning or before lunch to ensure that you'll have access to one of the few iPhones they have on display.

I tried the keyboard and it just didn't work for me. I read that you do have to spend some time with it but after playing with it for around 30 minutes, I still couldn't quite get the hang of it. The only way for you to find out is to try it yourself.

Also, Apple has a pretty generous return policy so you could just buy one, try it, and then return it.
