Influenza, often abbreviated as flu, is a highly contagious viral infection caused by a combination of viruses in humans, birds and animals. It usually occurs during seasonal weather changes; autumn and winter are the seasons when its outbreak is prevalent. The symptoms of this ailment include running nose, fever, sore throat, muscle pains, body ache, coughing, weakness and general discomfort. Many people may confuse this condition with common cold, or rhinitis, since both ailments share almost similar symptoms. However, influenza can cause much more severe effects in people with a weak immune system, in pregnant women or in children. In some cases, this may actually develop into pneumonia, often with fatal complications. Many people every year die from influenza or the pulmonary infections that follow.
