California is three hours earlier than the eastern seaboard. When I (Near Washington, DC) call my brother Joe (in California) and it is noon for me, he is eating breakfast at 9AM.

3 hours. Going from east to west, you have Eastern time, then:
Central, which is 1hour earlier than Eastern; then,
Mountain, which is 2hours earlier than Eastern; then,
Pacific, which is 3 hours earlier than Eastern.
