If th sound is connected to stereo or surround sound system then you could hear sound while the TV was black-screen

Lot's of TV's go black when they can't display the video.
It could be switched to an unused input.

Select the correct input.

Try to make it work with another source like DVD.

If a specific component goes out it won't necessarily affect anything else especially on flat screens.
