Quite suddenly the first joint of my middle right hand finger is stiff, swollen and painful. I don't recall injuring it. No arthritis in the family, nor any anywhere else in me. Could this be osteo-arthritis?

http://osteoarthritis.about.com/od/osteo... here is a website that will tell you the symptoms of what you are looking for and I do believe you are right you might want to go to the doctor and ask for some pills or surgery. Here are the symptoms that I have found does this sound like what you have? if so then yes call a doctor!
Joint pain
Joint stiffness
Joint tenderness
Limited range-of-motion
Crepitus (crackling, grinding noise with movement)
Joint effusion (swelling)
Local inflammation
Bony enlargements and osteophyte formation
I hope this helps.

It could be gout.

It could be an infection.

If it isn't better in 24 hours, see your doctor.

If you have not hit it on something, and have not been bitten by an insect on the joint, it could be arthritis, or maybe gout (this usually affects the big toe, but can affect any joint). Try warm salt water soaks to reduce swelling, rub it with analgesic cream - and take NSAIDs (aspirin, Aleve, Ibuprofin) to relieve pain and possible inflammation. If problem continues, see your Dr!

Have you considered GOUT? Very painful, and comes on without warning. Warm soothes it, Cold agitates it. It will be swollen and be warm to the touch. Gout is uric acid crystals that form around knuckles and joints. It affect my Big Toe, but I have friends that have had it in their knee's, ankles and hands. Apple Cider Vinegar with Mother (Non pasteurized) in a cup of tea will help dissolve the uric acid crystals. Tart cherry extract is also a great all natural way to dissolve the Crystals. I can ward off an attack now, before it ever gets started.
