An "antivirus" program.
Symantec-Norton, and McCafee are two leading producers.

Read under 'Norton Security'; it tells what a superior antivirus program does.

The best anti-virus programs are Norton and McAfee. Personally, I would select Norton.

Computers do not get diseases in the sense that we do. The software (i.e. programs) that is run on them can be subject to unwanted features that alter existing software. They can potentially be very damaging and even render a computer completely useless.

If such unauthorised elements are deliberately inserted into a program (by say, a hacker), this is called a 'virus' and this 'infects' the program and hence damage your computer and others that you may be in contact with by disc, flash drive, email or internet activity. As a person you cannot pass on a computer virus - it has to be passed on via software as described above.

Other respondents have outlined the need for protection against such computer 'infections'.

There are several systems.
An antivirus program usually includes protection against other malware.
You need one and only one active protector. For a windows computer that should be Microsoft Security Essentials because it is free and your computer will run faster than with others.
You also need a another antivirus program to double check. That should be Spybot-Search and Destroy. It is free.

You also should have a Firewall. Windows has a free one built it.

Another system is called a Sandbox. It only allows programs to run in a small area until you know they are safe.
Another good idea is to have a site adviser, like Web of Trust, for your browser. Also free.

Please remember to select a best answer button.
