I think you are better off just returning it without trying to play
repairman. They will give you a new one for this. Electronics
which overheat are possibly dangerous. It's not your fault.

Kindle overheating problem... from various users>

I have the Kindle Fire and I just sent a Return request, because it overheats while charging. and the battery dies in about 30 minutes. I hope is just a Bad batch ... from amazon forum

My gets hot as well. However I have noticed that it really gets hotter when I am using it while it charges than when I leave it alone.

I, too, am having the same problem. I received it as a gift for Christmas and it always felt warm. And today it overheated and will not turn on. I am so disappointed.

i was looking at others problems. did you do an update on your kindle? seems like some people started having problems after the update.
i bet kindle will not admit to that. ha.
they call it a hard start. kind of like rebooting a computer.
hold down the start button for 20 seconds to reboot your kindle. you might have to do this a multiple of times.
here is a support site for kindle.

My Kindle has done this as well, what I do with it, is usually unplug it, put it in rice, like a phonw if it's gotten wet, and let it cool down. It may sound unusual, but it works for me. After I let it sit for a few hours, I take it out, and press the power button down for 30 seconds, or until it turns on(:
