Don't forget that they worked a lot longer hours in those days. Much less free time, because there was a lot less automation. And the lack of good forms of light usually meant they went to bed when the sun went down and got up with the sun.

They played various games. Music was a big source of entertainment. Everyone in the town would go and visit any show or concert or play that came to town.

If they could get their hands on books they would read. They made toys. Some people were artists - painting, carving, etc.
