"Two kinds" is a short story from the book The Joy Luck Club
by Amy Tan. It was first published in 1989
Mr. Chong and Jing-mei are the main characters.
It's too stupid of a story really since no one who is deaf can be a music
teacher I ever heard of, so Mr. Chong is a 'fake music teacher' a poseur
stuck into this story for humorous effect if you will. The girl student
has a character flaw and is given to cheating on her piano lessons her
mom wants her to take up. She gets her comeuppance when she
plays everything wrong at her recital. Mr. Chong who is deaf, is the
only one there who thinks she is doing okay. Haha, should we laugh
or cry?

He's plain crazy, and she's ditzy.
Why she would even show up for the recital is beyond me.
