8/9 = 16/18

1/2 = 9/18


16/18 + 9/18 = 25/18 = 1 7/18

8/9 and 1/2 need to have the same denominator so they can be
added properly.
8/9 + 1/2 = x/18 + y/18 .... can you see that?
solve for each fraction to make it equal a denominator 18 fraction
8/9 = x/18, then x = 18(8/9)
1/2 = y/18, then y = 18(1/2)
18(8/9) + 18(1/2) = 18/9*8 + 18/2*1 = 2*8 + 9*1 = 16+9
So answer is 25/18.
