He had LOTS of credit card debt which he accrued while we were married. I was just informed that he's been discharged in bankruptcy. I have heard that they can come after me as his former wife because, even though I had nothing to do with accruing that debt, I was married to him and that alone makes me liable. I live in New York State. Should I be afraid of them "coming after me"? Thank you.
Was your name attached to the debt? Were they joint accounts? Were the debts assigned to your ex in the divorce papers? I had the same problem with my ex, but thankfully, the debts that were assigned to my ex were in the papers, and precluded me from being held responsible. Nonetheless, check with your attorney and make sure that you're in the clear.
