There are upwards of 8 varieties of Diurex. One of those eight is a formula marketed specifically toward men while the other 7 appear to be aimed toward relief for women, especially regarding menstrual and pre-menstrual bloating. The main principle of Diurex is to act as a diuretic. Diuretics are substances that increase urine production and therefore eliminate fluids from the body. While the Diurex for men relies on the stimulant caffeine for its diuretic properties (as well as the age-old herbal diuretic dandelion extract), many of the women’s formulas do not. Caffeine is also often used in many diet products for increasing metabolism, but it causes nausea, jitteriness, insomnia, elevated heart rate and increased blood pressure. It should not be used by pregnant or lactating women, those taking an MAOI drug, or anyone with heart or blood pressure problems. The main diuretic ingredient used in most of the women’s formulas is pamabrom. Pamabrom is a substance utilized by many products aimed at relieving bloating due to menstrual cycles. Many of these versions of Diurex combine pamabrom with analgesics such as acetaminophen in order to also relieve pain.
