Capillary action is responsible for much of the movement of water through green plants which are the base of all our food. It also is the force that causes towels to pick up water as the fibers are close enough together to create a channel where surface tension produced by water meeting air, which has less attraction for it than the water under or behind it forms a very thin "skin" of more dense than normal water. It is this thin "skin" that produces the force we call capillary action.
