FOR REGULAR USERS ONLY: What have you learned while using this site!!?
FOR NEWBIES ONLY: What do you expect to learn while using this site?
In no specific order, being a short timer:
1) I learned that there are actually different people with different problems and that there are different ways to solve them.
2) I've learned a great deal of things, but regarding the people, yes there are a lot of people who write a lot of rubbish, but there are a lot of people who are really caring and supportive, it's like being a part of a big community of people most/all of whom you've never met.
3) No offense, I learned the fact that so many people can't spell or take the initiative to use a spell checker.
4) I have learned that I need to be more selective when answering peoples questions because last week I realized that I had inadvertently answered a quiz question for someone. This made me feel that I had been used...:-)
5) I learned that people give you some interesting sites that you want from your questions providing its a decent question.
6) That some people half-way around the world think more like I do than some of my neighbors do.
7) That the Best Answer is not always the really best answer.
8) That some people are rude and immature because they can get away with being rude and immature. :-)
9) That tolerance is in the mind of the beholder.
10) I have enjoyed many of the jokes and polls and surveys.
More than anything else, I have learned that although there are millions of self-centered, uneducated, slow-minded, mundane, intolerant and melancholy people in the world, there are also millions of caring, well read and educated, intelligent, creative, understanding and funny people as well.
Well, I'm a regular, and I've learned how small this world really is in cyber space when I have gotten to know people from all over the world just by their questions, answers and comments. The personalities are distinct, yet equally enjoyable. I too have found a compatibility factor here that is unique! I think that the regulars have a common goal - to answer questions as best we can, to ask questions that entertain or make people really think, and to make comments, apologies and compliments with sincerity. You may be a newbie, but you are fast becoming a favorite, and I want to welcome you to the regular's club!
I have been asking and answering questions for over a year now. Your observations are very good. This is a good place to study human nature.
I learn more by answering some questions than the asker will from the answer.
By researching for the latest information I keep current on subjects I haven't looked at for a while.
I am a little more tolerant about spelling because I make so many typographical errors that It is a "not cast the first stone" kind of thing. You hit submit, then spot the error and hope nobody notices; but they always let me know.
My solution is to retype the question with the correct spelling. This habit of poor grammar and spelling is especially bad for the younger users because it could be a detriment when they go job hunting.
It makes some kind of sense that the asker doesn't recognize the correct answer when they see it. My attempt at a solution is to document.
You will also find that answering questions here will improve your conversational ability.
Things that I've learned from Askpedia's questions and answers:
- that you cannot make someone love you.
- that no matter how much I care, some people just don't care back.
- that it's not what you have in your life but who you have in your life that counts.
- that you shouldn't compare yourself to the best others can do but to the best you can do.
- that it's not what happens to people that's important. It's what they do about it.
- to appreciate and pass on a good message
I've learned that peace of mind is very precious on Askpedia.
I've learned that its very difficult to help someone if their questions are vague and missing important information. To get a proper/more varied response(s) the question must leave no doubt as to its content.
