You can play it safe and go for a major that has a natural transition to Pre-Med or Law degree programs. With a MD or a JD from a top school, you're pretty much guaranteed a lifetime to employment with steadily increasing salaries.

The other option is to go for a major that gives a natural transition to an MBA. Regardless of how the economy does, an MBA from a top school will always provide gainful employment.

I guess this means that you should go for a degree in biology, chemistry, English, and Economics.

A good solid grounding in finance with an Economics degree is a good way of getting into one of the top financial services companies. If you have what it takes in competitive and high stress environments like trading and investment banking, you could end up doing very well financially.
