I'm sure that Prime Minister Putin was aware of the action that was taking place ( he may have actually been the one to put the offensive in place before leaving for China )... but I'll go one step farther,
President Bush certainly had to have been apprised of the Russian invasion shortly (minutes) after the Georgian reports were being made public of the fact, while he was still in China.
When the world watched Bush and Putin talking together privately, shortly before they both left Beijing, they had extremely serious looks on their faces. I'll wager that they were talking about Georgia..."Unofficially"

That puzzled me! Why is it that he left Beiijing after the attacks began, as if he had no idea what was going to happen - or was that a smoke screen? I do believe the world should sit up and take notice of this conflict! We're talking super power here!
