ZENN: Full Electric Vehicles On Sale Now
While the major car manufacturers are busily trying to release a model or two of plug-in hybrids in the next few years, the race is on between those companies that are already offering ZEV (Zero-emissions vehicles). While we wrote earlier of Miles Motors, another company, ZENN (Zero Emission No Noise), has been selling electric vehicles in the US, Canada, and Europe for several years. On par with Miles in terms of performance, ZENN currently offers cars that can travel at up to 35mph with a limited range. Both are running to bring a vehicle to market that can break the 60 mph and 60 miles per charge barriers for a sedan. Tesla Motors is also working to produce a family sedan with extensive range and performance, and so far they’ve done what none other has done before.

I’m pretty pumped to see the results in the next few years, as the competition should bring a lot of choice, presently non-existent, to the average consumer when it comes to buying a ZEV.

ON THE WAY: Norway-based Think plans to sell its City electric car in the U.S. in 2009 and has an eye toward the Southern California market.

The Tesla is the only "true" electric car on the market at this time. It has a range of 220 miles and a claimed top speed of 125 mph. The recharge time is only about 3.5 hours. It was based on the Lotus Elise and the Elise was used as developement mule, but the finished vesion has very few part shared with the Lotus. It does look something like an Elise. You can go to TeslaMotors.com for details. The price is around $109,000.

Other electric cars are limited to 25 miles per hour. This is so they do not have to pass the same rules as regular production cars for safety and testing.

GM used to have an EV1 which you just plugged into your wall to charge it. It was popular with the owners but GM pulled the program. This was some time ago.

Now you have the Tesla which as mentioned in another answer, is the only fully electric car available in the market. I don't think it's available in Canada.
