Many people think it is wrong for athletes to take steroids to enhance their performance. This month, our question will lead to an analysis of what, if anything, makes steroid use bad. Is steroid use bad simply because steroids are banned from sports, and those who use steroids are cheating? Or, is there more to the story? Should steroids be banned from sports because there is something inherently wrong with using them? Are they too dangerous? Do the harms outweigh the benefits? Should individual athletes decide whether to take the risks of using steroids? (Boxing, playing football, and motorcycle racing are dangerous, yet we allow individual athletes to decide for them selves whether they wish to take the risk of participating in these sports.) Or, should steroids be flat-out banned from sports?

Don't confuse anabolic steroids with corticosteroids, warns psychiatrist Kenneth Mautner, MD, of Emory University. Anabolic steroids are used to build up muscle. Corticosteroids are used to dampen overactive immune responses and reduce swelling.
Doctors prescribe anabolic steroids to treat certain specific medical conditions. For example, they may be used to treat the muscle wasting seen in AIDS. Steroids may also be used to treat delayed puberty or loss of testicular function.
Anabolic steroids are powerful hormones. They affect the entire body.
Both men and women who take anabolic steroids may:
* Have tendon rupture
* Have heart attacks
* Have an enlarged heart
* Develop significant risk of liver disease and liver cancer
* Have high levels of "bad" cholesterol
* Have mood swings
* Fly into rages
* Suffer delusions
Teens who take anabolic steroids may:
* Have short height due to arrested bone growth
* Girls may suffer long-term masculinization
And many more side effects.
Most of the time I come down on the side of freedom, but for this particular use they must be banned. You can not have a person decide to live a diseased and short life for the sake of athletics. Allowing them forces all to make this decision.
The use of steroids, although dangerous to take, temporarily give an athlete an unfair advantage over those who want to play it safe, and avoid steroids. It's this unfairness that should lead to banning the use of steroids in all sports. I realize it's a personal choice as to what we put into our bodies, even if it's harmful, but in the sports arena where competition is so important, as is fair-play, there's no room for steroid use!
steroids give athletes a temporary advantage over other athletes however there are many problems. for example it can change the hormones in a woman and it can also lead to heart problems when not prescribed
i am perfectly fine with sportsmen using steriod during their training, but is absolutely against the usage of steriods in competitions.
their bodies are theirs to destroy, so why should we limit their freedom of choice to kill themselves with steriods?
to ensure fairness in the competition,we should either ban steriods totally r to make everyone take steriods, so as to allow them to compete on the same grounds. but in a competition, not everyone uses steriods, nor do everyone wishes to use steriods, the only solution left is to ban them.
Steroids are a drug, just like marijuana, it gives the user an advantage over other participants who refuse to do drugs. so whats illegal about them is steroid users would win everytime, in order to make it fair, our government looking out for the little guy, has stepped in to "help us out".
Steroids are very bad. Yes it help the performer of body builder, but the side effect is extremely dangerous. There are 16 side effect of using steroids but i only going to explain 4 of them. One, pimples all around your body, from head to toe.Two, Liver damages, it damages your liver until you can't even move. Three, high blood pressure. Steroids affect your emotion, and the effect of steroids to emotion is that you always be angry all the time. And four, impotent, which you can't have generation. If you want to live healthy and happily, stay out of Steroids because DRUGS KILL YOU
Yes steroids are bad to take and sports players (and everybody else that takes them) need to understand the health risks they are taking by ingesting the stuff!
