First watch Caddie Shack to get an idea of what you are up against.

You can get live traps like Have a Heart Trap, but they are expensive and do not work all that well.

You can try lots of commercial products like predator urine scent and the various pepper scents. Works sometimes.

My solution was to let the neighbors dog have access to my yard. That worked.

How to Keep Groundhogs Out of a Yard

While cute for Groundhog's Day, groundhogs quickly become annoying when they're digging in your yard, burrowing under fences and treating your plants like a salad buffet. There are few ways to humanely keep the pests out of your yard and protect your plants.

Buy Shake-Away online at Critter Repellent. It uses the scent of a fox in a granular repellent to keep groundhogs out of specific areas. You sprinkle the repellent around the area you want to protect. This product is organic and safe for children, pets and plants.
Step2
Use a chicken wire fence. The Humane Society recommends using a chicken wire fence that is 3- to 4-feet tall. Bend the chicken wire into an L shape and extend this across the ground for 6 to 12 inches. Loosely secure the chicken wire so that it's unstable. Doing this keeps the groundhogs from burrowing under the fence and climbing over the fence.
Step3
Install an electric fence four inches above the ground, running along a non-electric fence that surrounds your yard. The electric current keeps groundhogs and other common pests like raccoons out of your yard.
Step4
Trap and relocate the groundhogs. There are a variety of traps designed to humanely capture groundhogs. Once you have one trapped, relocate it to another location. Use the traps after the baby groundhogs are able to take care of themselves or they may starve to death.
Step5
Attack the burrows after the groundhog babies can fend for themselves. You can stuff mothballs or urine soaked kitty litter into the entrance of the burrows. Plug the burrows with grass and check that the grass remains in place. You can also put a wire mesh square over the hole to prevent the groundhog from reentering.
