It’s time for a close up analyze of this two blog giants. I was a Blogger fan in the beginning but in time I started concentrating on Wordpress because of its enhanced functionality. First of all I believe Blogger ( a Google service ) is the perfect solution for the average blogger. If you need a simple and fast way to start your online journal , to tell your stories or just to keep track of your life then with very little effort in under 5 minutes you are can create your account and web page by visiting the official site : www.blogger.com. The steps to create a new blog are very easy to understand and anyone can start a blog with almost no effort whatsoever.
On the other side is Wordpress. It’s integration into the Fantastico script collection made it very easy for webmasters to install and use it on their personal sites. So the first question appears : Why use Wordpress and not Blogger.
I will use the following abbreviations for my next descriptions ( WORDPRESS = WP , BLOGGER=B. , GOOGLE = G. )
1.Hosting Mode ( B ++ , WP ++ )
Even if you can make your account on the official
http://wordpress.org site the majority of people are using this script directly installed onto their sites. On the other hand the average B. user is using its official account hosted on Blogger servers. But you can install the B. script right into your site. The online control panel from their site is still the only way you can control how your script is working. As you can understand by now the true battle is between the blog hosted on the B. servers or the blog hosted with WP on your own server.
2.Indexing time ( B ++ , WP — )
A very important factor in our online experience as webmasters is the index time. Well BLOGGER wins this time because it has a big advantage: it’s hosted on google servers. The result is incredible: start a new blog and you’ll get indexed in less then 24 in google. Yes this is a true and tested thing. The WP site is just another website from the SE point a view but on B. it gets some extra points for being a blog.
3.Categories ( B — , WP ++ )
Well. This is the most important factor that made me change my good impression about B. ! There isn’t a simple way to make separate categories so you can sort your articles after this kind of criteria. In WP this is a piece of cake. This option in my opinion is a must have on a serious blog.
4.Templates ( B + , WP ++ )
On WD to install a new template is a piece of cake. It’s just as easy as copying some files to your server. On B. on the other hand things become a bit more complicated. You most host your pictures on their servers or use an external link for your pictures. Most of you know that a css is a very important thing in a professional looking template so what do you do with this file? Again. a separate hosting. Of course you can use the default templates G. has to offer but they are not really that good looking.
5.Pluggins ( B - , WP ++ )
OMG. This will probably be the subject of an entire new post congratulating the WP community for the amazing pluggins they made available. WP has almost every pluggin you can imagine for a website and B. is really behind this. I’m sorry but this is the truth. You have to change a lot of code to add extra functionality to your B. pages.
6.Traking ( B - , WP + )
Well the problem with B. is that even if it’s hosted for you they don’t show you any statistics. On the other hand you can see your hosting reports if you have a personal hosting so you can keep track of your visitors. The extra tracking pluggins for WP made it have a better score in my opinion.
7.Uploading Posts ( B - , WP + )
On B. you have to republish every time you make a major change. This takes time and if you are using a personal hosting for your B. site then be prepared for major problems when you have a lot of files. WP posting are instant and no waiting time is required.
8.Naming of files ( B- , WP++)
Making you .htaccess writable will offer you the possibility to have almost any file name you want for your WP postings. In B. the format is static and has to include the date of the posting in the path of the file.
9.Send posts by emails ( B+ , WP++)
Because of the massive spam in the past B. had to take a great security measure to eliminate the massive amounts of bad traffic generated by the blog frenzy. So now if the robot script think you’re blog is spamy you have to get approval from a human before you’re blog will be published again. The first sign of spamming was the mail post so It has become very hard to pass this filter for any kind of posts. Of course if all your posts are good you won’t have a problem with this. On WP everything is permitted. It’s your post so you’re in full control.
10.Flexibility ( B+,WP+++)
Overall I think B. is for a modest webmaster that just wants to publish its thoughts and ideas online with no much hassle. For an advance webmaster WP offers everything it needs and more and the fact that it’s also free makes it so attractive to majority of us. Even this blog is made in WP , after all the above information have convinced me this is the way to go for a professional solution.
