deisel trucks rpm gauge

the rpm gauge on my truck just stopped working all of a sudden and my battery isnt holding charge. i took the alternator in to have it tested and it says its fine. if i charge my batteries up then they will hold charge enough for me to drive the truck about 5-8 minutes if im lucky. eveyone i have talked to says its probably a short somewhere. i cant find it no where. please anybody that knows anythything about deisel trucks let me know what u think

First off you need to check your battery with a load tester as it just might be the battery is bad and the RPM went out about the same time and is not related to the other problem.
If the battery checks out good then to drain a battery in the short time you say it HAS to be the large cable to be able to handle to load without causing a fire, but I suspect a bad battery....
