If the award is given on questions times answers, you will get only easy questions of a certain type. Not too good a solution.
Here is how I would do it. Number of questions times an unknown factor. This would stop the inane question people since they wouldn't see immediate results.
The factor I would choose would be views. People will look at a hard or interesting question, they just won't answer it. People will not even look much at questions that are too easy. And I would not make it a simple relationship either. That would be too easy to back figure.
Two other opinions regarding formulas. The star rating system is brilliant, but the formula used for figuring ratings is not the best. The same is true for the formula for not choosing a best answer. So I worry a little about going to a formula system.
My intentions are these. I am not much of a complainer, but when the site grows to perhaps 1000 questions I may ask for a change. But only after asking some friends whose calculus skills are broader based than mine. I would want to make sure that any requested change was the best solution possible to justify it.
