Broken Back

My friend got a broken back from a car accident last year, and now she takes so many pain pills, I mean her doctor prescribes them for her but she is on alot and I am just worried that she is getting or already is addicted to them. Is it possible for her to just stop taking them cold turkey or could that be dangerous? I have heard that people on pain pills can go thru withdrawls or something. Is this also true?

If your friend has taken them for that long, she probably is already addicted to them. If she wants to get off of them it is recommended that the doctor cuts her down slowly, if she quits suddenly, she will experience withdrawls, which include: nausea, stomache cramps, muscle aches, chills, goose bumps, watery eyes, and other symptoms. I know from experience what this is like, so she needs to be stopped real slowly. Best of luck to the both of you....

Pain meds; if they are narcotics, can help for the immediate pain.
Although, as time passes, them become addicting.
As time goes on, the pain from the injury should be decreasing, and the usage of the pains meds should be decreasing as well.

The answers to your questions are that she is already addicted and quitting cold turkey is very dangerous and she will experience terrible withdrawal symptoms if or when she quits. Most physicians are very sophisticated about this matter and will gradually increase the dosage to alleviate the terrible pain. A few physicians do not do a good job.
The most important question is will she be getting significantly better? And is this treatable with surgery or physical therapy?

If shes in pain still, the answer is no, she won't suffer from medication, longest she doesnt overdoses herself and have someone close by take care of her when shes taking them pills... ;o)
