I often run into this problem with similarly based materials. Prevention with separating media is best, but when I muck up then it is a combination of handwork and I use my jackrabbit of other rotating tool with perhaps a wire brush. I have a variety of textures and sometimes have to experiment to find the best. What you use depends on its thickness. I wish I had a simpler solution.
