Proper way to send condolences to a distant relative

A distant relative recently died. She was young (62), and died from lung cancer. It was very sudden.
She was a 2nd cousin to my Mom. She was also MY Godmother.
Her family moved out of state a number of years ago, and we (my family) really have not been in touch... over the years we just lost touch with relocating, new jobs, etc...
While her burial will be out of state, our local Church will have a short Mass for her. Mom says that its not necessary that I attend, not send anything, other than a Sympathy Card.
I somehow feel that I should be sending something more; a small "something" that will let her family know that I cared for her.
What are your thoughts, and what can I do?

Since her family is out of state and thats who you want to send your condolonces to, I'd send something to the funeral where her family will be attending and not the mass. Cards are sweet and flowers eventually die. I like to send inspirational throws or plaques, they last longer.

i wrote a poem to celebrate my brother's life.
i don't like cliches either. if your comfortable with this, write what you loved about her. write from the heart. it doesn't have to rhyme. write about how you will honor her memory.
