Holiday Party with "optional gift"... Is it rude to decline?
Asked by: justthefacts from OCEAN GATE, NJ
My brother and his wife are hosting a holiday get together. There will be family and friends attending. Some small children; but not many.

The invitation, written by my sister in law states: Please attend; snacks, food, fun for the kids. Celebrate the holidays at our house....
Grab bag gifts are optional, $25. dollar limit, specify male or female.

Told my brother that we would attend, but was confused by the "Grab Bag"...
He told me.... "hey, do whatever you want." Sounded like he was against it; but his wife wanted to do this.

I'm confused and not sure what to do.

My brother, his wife, and two girls are great people. They have hosted numerous affairs at their home, and have always been gracious.

Im really just confused about what to do.

Im kinda wierd about grab bag gifts; I feel that they normally wind up in the garbage or being re-gifted.

If I DONT bring a gift; what will everyone else think of me?
Or, should I just shut my mouth and participate and forget the $25. bucks??

Please, any feedback is appreciated. Thank You!

You have it all figured out and I agree with you. But some people really enjoy these things. It isn't necessarily what everyone will think of you. You want everyone to have a good time. There is only one thing to do, it is not optional, it shows class and you have already figured it out. SYM and forget the $25. You knew it all along.

Hmmmm. If not everyone brings one, then not everyone will get one...right? If I really wasnt interested in getting one, and only considered bringing one cuz I didnt want to feel stupid Id probably forget about both and buy a little something for each of the kids. What about them? You only mentioned male or female gifts. Then youd look thoughtful and youd brighten it up for the kids. Your brother probably doesnt like it being optional because not everyone will get a gift then and that can feel awkward to both party host ...
