Electric motor conversion
Asked by: predfern

I have a used band saw, which came with a 3ph, 240 volt motor. I would like to adapt this motor, using capcitors on one leg to run on single phase, 240 volt. If this is possible, I would need to size the capcitor(s) or install what ever else could be used, aside from a converter.

What you will want to do, is get several capacitors of different sizes so you can fine tune the converter. Keep in mind that you can make a capacitor smaller or larger by combining it with other capacitors. Two capacitors connected in parallel will add to each other, and two capacitors in series will "get smaller".
These capacitors should be rated for at least 250 volts

What you have got is a 3 phase 240 Volt band saw.
You have acquired a piece that is powered by a 3 phase motor, but your shop only has single phase power. If you don't really understand what the difference between Three phase and single phase is then look here. You have probably heard that you can somehow hook up a 3 phase motor to single phase current to generate 3 phase power. This is possible, because an induction mot...

According to my Husband, what you are trying to do is not going to work.
A capacitor stores energy. You need to get energy.
By this, you need a generator.
Or, you would have to reverse polarity; it's just too much and not cost ef...

really the converter is the only simple choice but if you want to go high tech youd have to get something alot more expensive like a capacitor cooling.

HEY, You have acquired a piece that is powered by a 3 phase motor, but your shop only has single phase power. If you don't really understand what the difference between Three phase and single phase is then look here. You have probably heard that you can somehow hook up a 3 phase motor to single phase current to generate 3 phase power. This is possible, because an induction motor and an induction generator are basically the same things. The motor that you are using as a generator (rotary phase converter) is called an idl...
