How many chainsaws,lawnmowers, gas engines with pull cords are manufactured every year in North America.Why is this such a common experience which makes any of these costly pieces of equipment inoperable?

The number has to be in the millions because gas engines with pull cords are used everywhere.
The reason for the pull cord is because of the way a combustion engine works. To get it started, you need to pump the cylinders with air and oxygen and then light a spark. The pull cord turns the engine and provides the initial energy that puts this in motion.
