Assault on a police officer (or fireman, or public official) is considered aggravated assault, which is a higher class felony than simple assault. Aggravated assault has a greater range of penalties--higher fines, and a longer sentencing range.

The penalties would theoretically be the same. If a police officer is assaulted, he knows how to report it to the district attorney and how to produce the right evidence.
Assaults happen all the time on regular people who don't report it or something is wrong with the evidence.
Some states have found it necessary to have separate laws concerning killing a police officer, however.
