NO. Assuming you have had no prior contact with them, they have every right to be on your front steps (the "curtilage" of your home), where salesman, girl scout cookie pushers, and other members of the public are welcome to be.

North Carolina law is “…in the protection of one’s dwelling, only such force must be used as is necessary, or apparently necessary, to a reasonably prudent man. Any greater expenditure cannot be justifiable and is therefore punishable. State v. Hibler, 79 S.C. 170, 60 S.E. 438 (1907).

North Carolina law does not allow the use of deadly force solely to protect property, or to prevent theft, or to regain stolen property. An owner can defend his or her property using reasonable and necessary force, but not deadly force. A property owner cannot shoot a thief before, during, or after a theft. The same rule prohibits deadly force to prevent injury or vandalism to property.

It's generally not a good idea. In the best scenario, you'll have to hire an expensive lawyer to defend yourself and make the case that the situation falls into the legal limits for defending yourself on your property.
The reality is that it this happens to you, you'll never really know if the guns are real or if the people on your front door intend to shoot you or just scare you. If the people happen to be kids, you're going to have a tou...

In this situation and they do, break in, make sure (and this sounds awful I know) you kill them, not wound, you can't sue if you dead. This is a tip from a law enforcement officer I know. Of course, she may have been joking, never sure with her

No. A couple of guys walking on your steps does not constitute a reasonable assumption that you were in fear of your own life. Other circumstances would have to be considered when deciding upon lethal force on another human. If these two guys were chasing you and told you we are going to kill you, then by all means defend yourself. The circumstance of just seeing two guys with guns does not qualify under the reasoning part of defense.

well in florida you can use deadly force if you feel threatened, how ever if i saw a bunch of guys coming up to my house with guns I'd give them a waring and if they didn't listen i'd shoot.
however NEVER shoot to maime, don't even think about pulling the trigger if you arn't ready to kill them. i've heard some hear-say about a guy getting hurt while braking into a fellows house, he sued and won.

Very simply, I really think that it depends upon the circumstances.
If there was forced entry and they tried to hurt you,
If they started shooting your windows out,
If you felt that your life was as risk..
I would say, sure, go ahead, shoot them.
