Alcohol in Mixed drinks? Sink or float?
Asked by: RDC4687 from CORNELIUS, NC
Ethanol is less dense that water... but it always seems like the stronger part of the drink is at the bottom. I know pure ethanol floats on water, but how does liquor made for drinking react with mixers? Does it tend to gravitate toward the top or bottom?

You didn't ask, but ice doesn't float in alcohol.
Most mixers are designed to form solutions (small particles miscible in water) which are stable. Some may form mixtures. Some form suspensions which will settle. I found Midori melon liquor that deliberately sinks to the bottom forming a two layered effect.

I've found that if your cocktail has ice, it gets weaker as you reach the bottom of your glass. This is because the ice melts and has a dilutive effect.

For mixers without ice, my experience is that the alcohol gets weaker. Maybe it's because I'm getting drunk and don't notice the alcohol taste anymore....

Let it be clear that none of the alcohol will settle at bottom when mixed with water because of the density property. Usually splash of Grnadine is mixed to give great looks of layered drinks and this Grenadine settles at the bottom to give you illusion that alcohol has settled at the bottom.
Even if you mix any alcohol only with ice alcohol is never going to settle down.
