reaction to spines on a weed in the garden
Asked by: Dgsnee from SUSSEX, NJ
I tried to pull a weed from a planter. I wrapped my hand around, as I put pressure I was pricked by many tiny hairlike spines. My hand is tingly.
What should I do? I feel fine otherwise.

You should wear gloves next time. As long as you are having no systemic allergic reaction to to the attack you suffered courtesy of the defense mechanism of that plant ("week" is in the eye of the beholder), then you are fine. You don't need to do anything. The reaction is confined to your hand and will go away in a few hours of minutes. If your hand is bothering you, you can try applying Bactene or similar. I believe that application of witch-hazel is the traditional remedy.

The first question is, "Are you immuno compromised?" (diabetes, hiv, chronic disease, etc.) If you are, You should seek help immediately.
It might have been good to try to squeeze a drop on blood out at first, but you don't want to bruise it trying. Wash it throughly with soap and water. Blot dry. Apply a bandage to prevent infection from outside, especially if you are going to do more gardening or other activities that might get it dirty. Keep it clean. If it feels tingly two days later, seek help....
