The other big problem in estimating the Microsoft Office install base is that there is a huge problem with piracy, especially in developing countries.

The limited facts that I could find are:

- In 2004, there were 48 Million monthly visitors to Office online and 120 Million users that connect to Office Update. If you interpolate to 2007, that's approximately 160 Million users

So by combining all the information, you could say:

- There's ~160 Million active and licensed users of Microsoft Office
- Around 57% of these users are outside the United States
- The real number of Office Users is somewhere between 160 Million and 1 Billion, so taking a wild guess, it would be in the 500 Million user range. This is a number I've seen people estimate in analyst reports.
- The actual number could be larger because 1 Billion copies of Windows is the officially licensed copy of Microsoft Office. There's probably a +20% variance due to unlicensed copies in emerging markets.

One last thing, if you have access to Gartner or IDC reports, I do recall that they published some reports a few years ago.
