Why do Americans use a QWERTY keyboard?

Why did the Dvorak keyboard layout, whch places keys more efficiently for quick typing not catch on in America?

The QWERTY keyboard was invented first and it was widely used before the DVORAK keyboard came along. It was too much of a learning curve to get everyone to convert to a DVORAK keyboard since it would mean that you would have to start from scratch.

Also, there are some doubts as to whether the DVORAK keyboard is really much more efficient than the QWERTY keyboard. Once you get used to QWERTY, it...
