Shanghai is an amazing city. You have the juxtaposition between the old Shanghai at places like the Bund and the sleek modern Shanghai in the Pudong district.

If you're into nightlife, you have to check out places like Cloud Nine which is on the 87th floor of the Hyatt Hotel in Pudong. It's a great place that has the New York feel but it's full of trendy Shanghai locals. If you're looking for something that's more like old Shanghai but updated, check out 1865 Club in the old Bund observatory in the Bund. It's a classic building that used to be an observatory and it has great views of the river.

There are also lots of bars and clubs along Heng Shan Road and Hua hai road that caters more to locals instead of the expat crowd. The great thing about these areas is that there are many choices within walking distance.

Xintiandi is an area that gets a lot of attention and it does have a few pretty good restaurants/bars/clubs. However, it's a little too sanitized and full of expats/tourists.

When it comes to food, you can't go wrong in Shanghai. You can find cuisine from every part of China and even people like Jean Georges have opened an outpost in Shanghai. However, your best is going to be going with a local to the small unknown restaurants that focus on the food instead of decor. Some places to check out are Xi Jia Hua Yuan, Henry and 1221.

As for shopping, you can get the usual knockoffs and touristy crap along Nanjing Lu, but it's too touristy for me. You're not going to find great bargains in Shanghai. You're better off traveling to places like Suchou (Silk) or Hangzhou (Green tea) if you want to get real Chinese goods at great prices.

Can't help you on the golf side. I don't play and none of my local Shanghai friends play golf. Apparently, it's really expensive to play golf in Shanghai.
