Why do we believe that strangers can give us answers?
I was reading an article about making decisions and one of the tips they gave was to not ask too many people for advice, especially people who don't know us. Why do we seek answers on Askpedia rather than trust our own decision making skills or trusting our close friends and/or family?
Sometimes the people closest to us are too close to the issue to look at it objectively, and sometimes those we trust the most simply might not have the answer. When that happens, you sometiems have to think outside of the box and seek help elsewhere. Sometimes, by pure luck, you run into someone that knows just what you are talking about and has good advice to give.
I used to have patients ask me questions all of the time. They would be about the craziest things and for the life of me, I couldn't figure out why I was always fielding these questions, but I answered them to the best of my ability or at least steered these people to the right source for their answer.
Now that I think of it, it's a lot like being on here. The only difference is that we choose which questions we answer.
I think we figure that those closest to us will tell us what we want to hear, and not necessarily the truth for fear of hurting our feelings. On a site like this, people are honest and straight-forward with their answers - they've got nothing to lose! If we don't like their answers, we just suck it up!
I am always looking for new ideas and fresh approaches. Look how much I have learned from you. Contrary to what you read, I think it doesn't hurt to ask. I have received lots of great tips from people on here. It is true you get too few answers of any type, and fewer still good answers. Here you get to ask for what you need and look at what you want. That is sometimes better than paying a lot of money for continuing education courses. A person attends those and pays a lot and gets nothing out of most of them. And then there is the one that answers a lot and makes it all worthwhile. Always you can make a better decision the more you know about things. Knowledge is power. And everybody knows about different things.
I believe sites like AP allow for enough anonimity so that the visitor can open up and let it all hang out. Sometimes just stating your problem or need is enough to help you find your own answer. That is probably why so many answers we give are not revisited and noted by the questioner. And it is better to have a lot of ideas to chose from when a dilemma arises. After all, we know that two heads are better than one. And no one has to take our advice anyway. So, nothing ventured nothing gained might be one of their prevailing attitudes.
For me, I personally only want straight answers. I would trust almost anyone. I don't know why everyone goes on here, but i know that I for one would like to help people. I don't care if anyone wants to help me. I just went on google to find an answer to my one question, but it brought me here. I enjoy this site because not only can people help me, but I can help them with all there questions. If I know the answers.
Nobody has all the answers which is why you want to poll as many people as possible. Strangers are less likely to worry about hurting our feelings, so you usually get unbiased answers from them rather than your friends. Plus, by using AP you are getting a more diverse sampling of people as opposed to your friends who are likely of the same age, race, and background.
On Askpedia you will remain anonymous, and we as humans always tend to want approval form the group, rather than just please our selves with what we really want. I tend to follow the crowd, I tried to go on my own for a while and it didn't work at all. I guess we should accept the fact!
there are strangers who give great advice. Sometimes friends & family will judge you based on what they know about you and strangers, since they don't know you, they will answer straight up and sometimes a stranger makes us realize things our own friends and family don't.
Sometimes it's easier, more private, and more objective asking a stranger. A stranger will be direct and less emotional answering questions as oppose to friends and family.
i think a stranger is gonna give u better advice because they wont try to not hurt your feelings. when you ask a friend for advice they are likely to give you a sugar coated response. a stranger on the other hand first off doesn't know anything about you so they are going to give it to you straight forward. plus different people may have different takes on the situation. i personally would rather come on here ask the members of ap what they think or what they would do bc i not only get a straight honest from the heart answer but i also get lots of different point and views.
