Child maintenance and legal matters
Asked by: LBHolmes from -
I need help. this is serious... I have a baby and my parents dont agree with it because her mother is not the same race as i am, i work on a part time job and attend school. with the money i earn i buy things for my baby! Today i had gone to see my baby, and when i returned home my parents were really mad at me, it went so far to a fist fight. My dad now threatens me that if i do go see my baby, he will thrash me and call the cops to take me away and send me to a place of safety, he had also said that i cannot work anymore.

What i would like to know is that is my father allowed to take me away from my part time job, because that is my only source of income to support my baby, and is my parents allowed to stop me from seeing my child???

I need some advice on what i should do, because at the moment i am too scared to do anything!.

And by the way i am 17 years old.

Please its urgent :-(
Thanx

You don't have to quit your job, and you don't have to stop seeing your baby! If you have another place to stay, I would suggest going there as soon as possible. You are a victim of child abuse, and you can press charges against your father. You call the police before he does! He can't send you anywhere, but you have to get to a safe place - away from him! He threatened you with bodily harm! Good luck, and congratulations on stepping up to the plate and caring for your child!...

First, your location might make a difference on this.
I am not a lawyer and good for me for that. I have had some college law.

In most places your father can do what he is doing. As I see it he has made one big mistake and that is the fist fight. If you were hit, you should report this to child protective services in your area. That is probably your best chance to protect your rights.

It is unfortunate that you are unable to provide more detail. Without knowing your state a lot could go into speculation. First and far most I believe your heart is in the right place. Remember you must put the effort into the result that you want. As Community Organizer in the inner city I have experienced situations like yours.
